I'm surprised hiccup medications aren't marketed to Rockabilly bands. Major untapped market...

Plague Among Us

Things that encourage piracy:
  • Unreasonable prices,
  • DRM/Copy protection,
  • Lack of availability.
There's a RedBox 1/4 block from my apartment. I was happy to just rent from that instead of downloading movies. I wouldn't buy online 'rentals' or downloads because they were much more expensive than a RedBox rental.

I decided to rent 5 movies for a long weekend at the studio. Our studio is full of professional gear, so we expect our shit to always work. FOUR of the five DVDs I rented would not play. They were brand new, no scratches. They couldn't play because of copy protection. The copy protection was so severe that I couldn't play them on anything we had in the studio. Not the MacPros, not the professional $5,000 reference DVD Player, not the professional kiosk playback machines, not the burner machine, nothing. I couldn't get a refund on my rental fees for the four movies I could not watch.

Thus officially ended my desire to bother with legitimate channels.

Copy protection and region restrictions only affect legitimate customers. When I download a torrent, I KNOW I won't have any issues playing the movie. No unskippable trailers, no warnings in twenty different languages, no annoying menus that cause even the most beefy players to lag, nothing but the movie I want to watch. No hassle, no time restrictions on streaming, no physical DRM to hamper my ability to play it. No blocking of my being able to watch it because I'm in the wrong country. Even if it were to cost me double the cost of a rental, Pirates have a better product.

The industry (of which I am a part and do everything i can to discourage DRM and price gouging) needs to pull its head out of its ass and stop with the bullshit they themselves are causing that drive people to easier methods to consume entertainment.

Now that Scalia is gone, does this mean another one of Reagan's horcruxes is destroyed?

Intrusive Friends beat Intrusive Thoughts

I've had this comic open in a browser tab for the better part of a few weeks now. I debated whether or not to post it and always wussed out at the last minute. The insidious thing about this that people hold onto the belief that others will never know unless you reach out... despite that when you do reach out, the common response from other people is that they turn away and make remarks about "disturbing behaviour" instead of being the friend you actually need. So this causes a lot of people to say nothing at all due to the negative responses they would otherwise get.

Unfortunately, the people who turn away and make remarks are often the same people I've seen try to make themselves seen at events like Cold Waves. I think the message spoken by those who organized the event is largely lost on people in a scene where they tend to associate only when they want something from you. Rubbing shoulders and feeling good about themselves and turning a blind eye to those who deal with this kind of shit every day of their lives.

(I got dumped while I was at the venue for Cold Waves II. Several people who I considered to be friends basically told me to cheer up and to stop being a downer despite being told what happened. I spent most of my time during the show alone. Physically and emotionally. And not by choice. The person who dumped me was the only person I considered potential relationship material in the past 10 years. I have been largely dateless and single for the rest of the time.)

I also have an issue with some who put themselves out there to talk and say that when we feel this way, we must reach out to others. Well. I disagree.

If you know someone who deals with anxiety and depression and has a hard time with it, it's YOUR duty as their friend to reach out to them... ask them how they're doing, keep in touch, keep that connection alive and remember to keep them involved. Even if it feels like you have to do it against their will. That is, if you even consider them a friend at all. That's how our intrusive thoughts win. If they were a friend, they'd ask me if I'm okay, but since they're not asking if I'm okay, then they don't consider me a friend and I shouldn't waste my time reaching out to them.

Putting expectations on people who deal with severe depression to be the one to reach out is to only make things more difficult for them when things already feel impossibly so.

When someone seems difficult and you know they deal with depression, the goal should be to make things LESS difficult for them. Telling someone to "cheer up" and distancing yourself from them because they're too much of a downer is exactly the opposite of that.

Mix 12: Broken (A DJ mix by James Martin)

Broken: A DJ Mix by James Martin (Mix 12)

Notes: Swinging back in the other direction from Mix 11, I tried to make the tightest most focused mix that I could. My style had been to throw some twists of tempo or genre towards the end and rather than do that again, I decided to end it while it was still sweet. This mix suffers from some dynamics inconsistencies, something that could not be overcome unless I were to further compress the audio, something I did not want to do for the sake of sound quality.

Mix 11: Goodbye (A DJ Mix by James Martin)

Goodbye: A DJ Mix by James Martin (Mix 11)

Notes: Saying goodbye to the 'Anti House' name, an attempt at moving on beyond constraints that I put upon myself, trying to do something new with the concept: this is the ''kitchen sink'' mix. Genre hops, live mixing dropped in along with some arranged finishes, stretching things out as much as I could. If I had to do this one again, I'd probably ditch most of the first half and just make a tighter, banging mix out of the second half instead: I feel like it meanders a little too much until just after the one hour mark. A more consistent tempo than the other mixes, good for listening to if you like to run marathons.

Notes: Finished and released before #8 by almost a year. I was definitely in between two places at the time, this mix reflects the restlessness I was dealing with when also trying to heal (reflected in #8). Anti House 6: Nothing Left to Say

Anti House 6: Nothing Left to Say

Notes: My 'hypocrite' mix. Leaned into house and then leaned right back out of it as hard and far as I could go. This was ultimately a desperate attempt to find something new out of the rut I felt like I had gotten myself into. Little did I know what was going to inspire me next.

Notes: A melancholic period. I truly had no idea what I was in for. Things looked hopeful. And then things weren't. Mix Tape: Anti House 4

Mix Tape: Anti House 4

Notes: Another dark period. This one is less of an intended single CD length mix and more a collection of bits and pieces that were cut from previous attempts that fit well enough together. This one has less cohesiveness than the previous three Anti House mixes but still manages to work on its own. Fun fact: All handwriting in the cover image was done by 'writing' with a mouse. It's a miracle it's even legible.
